What does it mean to be out of network?
Some insurance companies don't pay enough to clinicians for it to be worth staying in their network. An out of network therapist does not directly send a bill to your insurance company. We bill you directly if we are out of network by collecting the payment at the end of the session. At that point you get a superbill (a fancy name for a receipt). You'll receive a superbill once a month through email. You can take that superbill and submit it to your insurance company for reimbursement. Your insurance company will reimburse you directly.
Out of Network Options:
We charge between $90-150 for a 55 minute session, depending on the therapist. We accept cash, credit card, or checks at the time of service. We will not be able to bill your insurance directly, however, we will provide you with a superbill at the end of the month that you can submit to your insurance company. Before booking an appointment, we suggest calling the number on the back of your insurance card, inquiring about your out-of-network therapy benefits, and learning how to submit an out-of-network reimbursement claim. If you want to find a provider in-network with your insurance company, let us know and we are happy to let you know if we recommend any of them!
How We Determine Our Session Rate:
This is such a great question. There are a lot of hidden, unpaid costs that factor into a 55 minute session fee. Here are a few hidden fees that independent therapists have to factor into their session rates:
Rent, Utilities, & Malpractice Insurance
Monthly costs for a records management system, billing expenses, credit card transaction fees, and time spent on client records/notes.
Contractor, attorney, and yearly CPA fees.
Licensure fees and required continuing education classes.
Free consultations offered to all clients.
Marketing expenses and unpaid hours promoting the practice.
Personal health insurance fees that are not subsidized by a larger company and therefore higher.
Time spent on free community events and mental health advocacy at a local and national level.
Educational debt and debt incurred from 2500 unpaid hours as a trainee/intern required for graduation/initial licensure.
The need to make a living wage to care for ourselves and families.
All of these things wrap up into a fee that gets charged to clients. However, if you are interested in finding someone with a lower fee or more accessibility, we are happy to help you find that person and are more than happy to work with you to do that!
