FAQS:

How much does therapy cost with insurance?

Every insurance company reimburses at a different rate, and your cost will depend on the insurance company and plan you have selected. Some people have no out of pocket costs with their insurance, some have a co-pay, and some have to meet a deductible before benefits kick in.

What does it mean to be out of network?

Some insurance companies don't pay enough to clinicians for it to be worth staying in their network. An out of network therapist does not directly send a bill to your insurance company. We bill you directly if we are out of network by collecting the payment at the end of the session. At that point you get a superbill (a fancy name for a receipt). You can take that superbill and submit it to your insurance company for reimbursement. Your insurance company will reimburse you directly for whatever coverage you may be due.

Out of Network Options:

Our therapists charge between $90-150 for a 55 minute session, depending on the therapist and what you are being treated for. We accept cash, credit card, or checks at the time of service. We will not be able to bill your insurance directly for cash pay/Out of Network services, however, we will provide you with a superbill at the end of the month that you can submit to your insurance company. Before booking an appointment, we suggest calling the number on the back of your insurance card, inquiring about your out-of-network therapy benefits, and learning how to submit an out-of-network reimbursement claim. If you want to find a provider in-network with your insurance company, let us know and we are happy to make a referral or let you know if we recommend anyone within your network!

How Does a Therapist Determine Their Session Rate?

This is such a great question.  There are a lot of hidden, unpaid costs that factor into a 55 minute session fee. Here are a few hidden fees that independent therapists have to factor into their session rates:

  • Rent, Utilities, General Office Operations Expenses, & Malpractice Insurance

  • Monthly costs for a records management system, billing expenses, and credit card transaction fees.

  • Time spent on client records/notes after the session and time spend submitting insurance claims/corresponding with insurance companies.

  • Contractor, attorney, and yearly CPA fees.

  • Board Licensure fees and required, often costly, continuing education classes. Additional fees for dual licensure or licensure specializations.

  • Free consultations offered to all clients.

  • Marketing expenses and unpaid hours promoting the practice.

  • Personal health insurance fees that are not subsidized by a larger company and therefore higher.

  • Time spent on free community events and mental health advocacy at a local and national level.

  • Donated time to provide a certain number of sessions each month to under resourced persons.

  • Possible Educational debt and debt incurred from 2500 unpaid hours as a trainee/intern required for graduation/initial licensure.

  • The need to make a living wage to care for ourselves and families.

All of these things wrap up into a fee that gets charged to clients. However, if you are interested in finding someone with a lower fee or more accessibility, we are happy to help you find that person and are more than happy to work with you to do that!
